Built for Black Books. Rooted in Community.

Kinfolk Lit is a literary platform celebrating Black books, Black stories and the entire literary ecosystem, from readers and authors to publishing professionals, creators and the communities that help books find their audience.

We create spaces where the people who write the books, champion the books and love the books can find one another.

Kinfolk Lit

The Community Behind the Literary Family Reunion

About Kinfolk Lit

Kinfolk Lit grew from Black Book Bash, the event that started it all. What began as a celebration of Black books, Black readers and the online communities bringing them together has grown into a year-round literary community built around discovery, conversation and connection.

Our signature event, Kinfolk Lit Fest, brings that community together in person for an annual three-day literary family reunion. Kinfolk Lit Fest is produced by Kinfolk Lit Fest, Inc., a Florida nonprofit corporation.

Beyond the Festival, Kinfolk Lit exists to help Black books find their people, create meaningful connections across the literary ecosystem and build spaces where Black literature is celebrated all year long.

The books brought us together. Kinfolk keeps us connected.

The People Behind Kinfolk Lit

Built by people who believe Black books deserve big rooms.

Meet Casey

Founder, Visionary

Casey R. Kelley has been about books since learning to read at two years old. Today, she is a literary strategist, entrepreneur and founder of Kinfolk Lit, bringing decades of experience in audience strategy, brand building and community to the literary world.

Through Casey Kelley Media Agency, she has worked on book launches for ReShonda Tate, Jeezy, Brandy, Eriq La Salle, Victoria Christopher Murray, Tina Knowles and more. In 2023 and 2024, Casey led the transformation of the ESSENCE Authors stage from traditional signings into standing-room-only conversations celebrating Black literature.

Before books became the business, Casey spent 20+ years in insights and analytics working with brands including Coca-Cola, Hershey and MillerCoors. She later co-founded Blended Designs, a Black-owned backpack company she and her husband Harvey grew to seven figures in annual revenue. Her work has landed her on The View, The TODAY Show and in USA Today, ESSENCE and theGrio.

Those chapters now meet at Kinfolk Lit, where Casey gets to do what she has been doing since she was two: love books, find their people and bring readers together.

Casey lives in Florida with her real-life book boyfriend, Harvey, and is mom to two amazing sons and bonus mom to five brilliant daughters.

The Team

Kinfolk Lit is built by people who believe Black books deserve big ideas, thoughtful spaces and a community built around them. Our team brings together experience across literary programming, publishing, partnerships, events and community building to turn that vision into something readers can experience all year long.
